When I come across 船到橋頭自然直, I interpret the speaker as trying to console the listener, telling them not to worry it will all turn out OK in the end.

In English people often say something similar to.
Things always come out right in the end. This of course is not always the case.

Cross that bridge when you get to it. In my opinion means more along the lines of "Don't worry now, wait until you have to solve the problem then solve it."

It would be interesting for me to read a Chinese passage that conforms to the Cross that bridge when you get to it interpretation.
In Chinese, we say 船到橋頭自然直 when we try to console people especially when they are in trouble. But we don't imply that everyting will come out right in the end. I remember we sometimes joked about the phrase by saying "船到橋頭自然直,直不了,看著辦."
